August Start-Up Report: Strong Growth in the Middle of the Summer Slump

As start-up reports by STARTUPS.CH indicate, every August means shrinkage in the number of new companies being registered. Nothing has changed this year either. With 2949 new entries in the trade register, August was the by far poorest month of this year. Compared with the last four years, however, it was the slightest decrease ever recorded. This gives rise to optimism.

Strong Growth of 6.04%

As indicated in the start-up report by STARTUPS.CH, August saw 6.04% more new companies registered in the trade register compared to the same period of the previous year. In absolute terms, this corresponds to 2949 new registrations. Ever since 2014 the number of new companies registered in August has been constantly growing, but never so strongly as it was the case this year. That growth could be recorded mostly in the German part of Switzerland (+9.74%). This is especially due to the cantons of Zurich, Bern and Zug. They are the cantons where every time a majority of new companies are founded. Last month 17.53% of them were established in Zurich, whereas Bern’s and Zug’s shares were 7.93% and 6.14%, respectively. In all these cantons with the highest number of new companies being registered strong growth could be recorded. In Zurich it was 7.48%, in Bern 11.43% and in Zug even 17.53%.

Ticino Still on the Decline

Once again optimism in the economy was of little benefit to the canton of Ticino. Compared to the previous year, it is the only part of the country where a negative growth of -13.17% was recorded. This is a continuation of an unsettling trend. Already in the previous months Ticino saw a (partially strong) decline in new registrations. In July it was 20.22%, in June 21.84% and in April 14.98%. Only in January (+4.14%), March (+9.40) and Mai (+10.66%) Ticino improved the number of new registrations compared to the previous year.
