Chleiderei: Growing and Sustainable Children’s Clothes from Eastern Switzerland

Appenzell’s start-up called Chleiderei manufactures children’s clothes that grow together with the child and can thus be worn for at least three years. This saves the environment and money. Manufactured in fair working conditions in Europe, the clothes are made entirely from bio textiles.

Clothes Growing Together with the Child for Three Years

Founded via STARTUPS.CH, Chleiderei, a young company from Speicher in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, has developed children’s clothes that grow together with the child. The first collection could be put on the market in the early summer of 2018. Due to its modular design, the dress can, when needed, e.g. when the child has grown bigger, be easily and very quickly extended without having to use any additional aids. Thus, the clothes can be worn for at least three years. Such design helps save the environment and money.

The founder, Manuela Gübeli, came up with this idea through her daughter. ‘She was growing and growing, and in addition to my job I was constantly preoccupied with buying new clothes for her. As a person who thinks and acts in a sustainable way, I had to observe the opening hours of second-hand shops so that I could keep “the textile waste” more or less in check,’ says Gübeli. She sat down to the sewing machine and designed the first simple dress extensions. Each time she could receive feedback from her daughter.

Sustainable Slow Fashion

Chleiderei clothes are designed by Manuela Gübeli in Appenzell and manufactured in fair working conditions in Germany and Poland. They are made entirely from bio textiles. Chleiderei attaches great importance to sustainability. This is why, instead in Asia, the decision was made to manufacture the clothes in Europe so that, due to short transport distances, less CO2 could be emitted. In addition, recycled packaging materials are used.

With this design, Chleiderei follows the slow fashion trend, which stands for sustainable and aware fashion. With her clothes, Manuela Gübeli would like to counter the fashion that holds only one season and has to be replaced every year. Her meticulously tailored clothes are meant to bring joy to her customers for many years and thus reduce the consumption of raw materials and the production of textile waste.
