Marketing ideas to beat the summer slump

The summer slump affects all business sectors. From fashion stores to electrical retailers, everything slows down as customers head for the sun.

The summer slump can be a difficult period. People would rather spend their time relaxing by the pool or on holiday than shopping on hot city streets or struggling through the city centre.

But you can turn this to your advantage! It sounds strange, but it works. Potential customers are very receptive to creative promotions at this relaxed time of year. Customers are especially open to smart marketing measures. This might not bring immediate results, but after a few weeks you will be reaping the rewards.

Adapt your advertising

At the height of summer, keep it simple. Use inspiring, relaxing or funny designs. Focus on topics like sun, summer, travel, leisure, garden and the great outdoors. You are guaranteed to draw attention to your brand during the summer slump.

FLYERALARM’s graphic designers have lots of ideas for you, visit us in store in Zurich or call us on +41 44 583 15 67.

This leaves one key question to be answered: if your customers are away during the warmer summer months, how will your brilliant summer ads reach them? Here are some ideas.

Visit your customers

Organise give-away promotions, product presentations or small-scale shows wherever your customers are. For example, print your logo on mini cool bags, or funny sayings on drinks cans, round up a couple of colleagues and take them with you to the local pool, lake or beach. You can hand cold drinks out to potential customers. They will be glad to have a cool drink and it doesn’t take a huge amount of effort to organise.

The same principle lends itself to a range of additional measures. Sunglasses, beach balls, snapback caps and (ready charged) bluetooth speakers are always welcome promotional gifts in the hot summer months.

How to attract customers

Organise a summer party. Make sure there’s something in it for your customers; an party alone will not draw crowds. Why not invite some food trucks to your site? Modern mobile snack bars are always a hit. You can also set up a series of games with prizes. Try a raffle, or beat the goalie, the options are endless!

The most important thing is to give plenty of notice for your event. Create a Facebook event and distribute flyers or send personalised invitations.

Make the most of the summer slump

Another way to make the most of a period of slow business is to use the quiet time to perfect your website. We know, it’s not as fun as a creative marketing campaign, but in the long term this work will pay off. Update your “My Business” information on Google, add SEO texts to your home page and update your email newsletter distribution lists.

It is also a great time of year to organise a staff team-bonding event. Anything goes, from a barbecue to a boat trip, just as long as it brings your team together. After all, slick teamwork will be key to getting through the busier times of year.
