November 2017 Start-Up Report: Recovery in Ticino

In November, the number of new company formations was going up unchecked. The decreases, which were at times strong, could be compensated by growth recorded in the cantons where the number of new registrations is usually the highest. Fortunately, also Ticino could show growth in November.

2017 – A New Record Year?

In November 3,718 new organisations were registered throughout Switzerland. This accounts for 252 or 7.27% more than in November 2016. Compared with the previous month, this translates into an increase by 142 new company formations or by 3.97%. As STARTUPS.CH reports show, this year it is already the seventh month with record values compared with the four previous years. If not especially few new companies are registered in December, 2017 is going to be a new record year as far as company formations are concerned. It is delightful news for the whole economy.

Differences Between Cantons

As with every month, there were strong differences between individual cantons. Some cantons had to record a sharp decline. This concerns, above all, cantons such as Glarus (decline: 58.82%), Obwalden (decline: 40.74%), Nidwalden (decline: 36.00%) and Appenzell Ausserrhoden (decline: 30.43%). These partially massive declines, however, did not affect much the whole outcome, as they were recorded in cantons where new registrations are rather not so often. For instance, Glarus’s share in the total result is 0.19%. The share of the cantons of Obwalden, Nidwalden and Appenzell Ausserrhoden, each with 16 new companies being established, represents, in each case, 0.43% of the total result.

Things look better in cantons which usually see the highest number of new registrations. Here particularly the cantons of Vaud (share: 9.95%, growth: 13.50%), Ticino (share: 5.89%, growth: 10.61%) and Zug (share: 5.57%, growth: 22.49%) could shine. The considerable growth in Ticino is particularly reassuring. in Ticino the year 2017 has so far been characterised by decline. Therefore, it is to be hoped that also December will help offset it.
