September Start-Up Report: Leaving the Silly Season with Strong Growth

As far as new registrations are concerned, 2017 continues to be a good year. September is already the fifth month of this year in which, compared with the four previous years, more organisations were incorporated with the Swiss Commercial Register. It is showed by the start-up report compiled by STARTUPS.CH. Only Ticino recorded a decline once again, albeit a little lower than in the two previous months.

Still Strong Growth

Compared with the four previous years, September, followed by March, May, June and August, is also the month in which more new registrations were made with the Commercial Register. In total, 3325 new organisations were incorporated and registered with the Commercial Register. This is 228 or 7.36% more than in the same time period of the previous year. In absolute terms, it was even 376 more registrations compared with the previous month. This translated into a growth rate of 12.75%, although it should be put into some perspective. As statistical data of the four recent years show, August is traditionally the month with the lowest number of new registrations.

Regional Differences

The highest growth could be recorded in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Here 10.09% more new companies were registered than in September 2016. This is predominantly to the canton of Geneva. In absolute terms, as many as 312 new organisations were registered in the canton of Geneva in September. This translates into a growth rate of 16.85%. The new entries in the Commercial Register of the canton of Geneva accounted for 9.38% of all the new registrations made across Switzerland in September.

Compared with the previous year, the growth rate in German Switzerland amounted to 6.92%. Such growth is still very remarkable. Here considerable growth could be observed mainly in cantons such as Zurich (17.65% of all the registrations), Bern (7.76% of all the registrations) and Aargau (6.38% of all the registrations) where there are always many registrations. Compared with the previous year, Zurich recorded a growth rate of 5.01%, Bern 4.45% and Aargau even 8.72%.

Ticino had to record a decline in the number of new company registrations once again, however. In September the decline rate was still only 1.89%, but in August and July it reached already 13.17% and even 20.22%, respectively.
