A Start-Up Called ELEPHBO Is Improving the World by Making It More Stylish

Founded just one year ago, ELEPHBO has already seen an exciting evolution. The Swiss start-up creates a wide range of fashionable articles and accessories by recycling old cement sacks from Cambodia.

Idea

Nicolas Huxley, ELEPHBO’s founder and CEO, has already been to Cambodia many times. There he could see heaps of empty cement sacks lying around. It soon dawned on him that these sacks, featuring unique and cool designs, also offer a lot of potential. For their original purpose, the bags must be lightweight and yet very robust. These are the properties you often combine in the fashion industry.

Production

ELEPHBO places great value on sustainability and fair trade, and sets high quality standards for its products. All design work is still done by Nicolas Huxley personally. The products are then manufactured in Asia. For this purpose, the start-up works with many hand-picked partners in Asia, who are monitored for fair working conditions also by external third parties. The use of animal products has been almost completely given up in the manufacturing process. It is only sneakers where genuine leather is still used to make them comfortable to wear.

New Collection

The new collection includes bags, backpacks, wallets, caps and shoes. They are available in four different designs. The collection is from now on available online and at selected retailers. For this new collection alone, ELEPHBO has recycled more than 25,000 cement sacks in Cambodia, actively contributing to the improvement of the country’s situation. In addition, ELEPHBO has decided to expand its local commitment even more. Together with an NGO, a project has been launched to produce bricks from recycled plastic.
