How does a Swiss startup enter a new market in just a few days?

Through automation and artificial intelligence: The Swiss proptech startup storabble has entered Spain as its fifth market, automating the vast majority of its research and data analysis. According to the company, tens of thousands of potential locations were vetted in just two days.

Spain follows Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and France. With 1,955 verified storage locations across 50 of Spain's 52 provinces, it is already the platform's largest market in terms of the number of listed locations.

The unique aspect: To enter the market, storabble neither opened a local office nor hired on-site researchers. The two founders, Sandro Kalbermatter and Oliver Meyer, managed the entire process over a long weekend from a mountain hut in the Engadin.

48 AI bots scan the Spanish market

In July, storabble deployed 48 AI bots simultaneously to identify potential self-storage locations throughout Spain. Within two days, 27,430 points were captured.

Subsequently, an AI-powered algorithm evaluated the identified locations based on relevance and quality criteria defined by storabble. The technical infrastructure required for this is relatively modest: according to the startup, the algorithm runs locally on a gaming graphics card.

A total of 27,524 locations were checked. Of these, 1,955 met the requirements for inclusion on the platform. This corresponds to about seven percent of the locations examined—or roughly one out of every 14 sites checked.

"Mapping an entire country used to be a project that took months, with a team on the ground. We did it from a mountain hut in a few days. In the past, capital determined who could enter a new market. Today, it’s the technology you’ve built beforehand that decides," says Oliver Meyer, founder and CEO of storabble.

What does storabble’s expansion reveal about the Spanish market?

The data collected also provides insight into the structure of the Spanish self-storage market. According to storabble, the 1,955 recorded locations are backed by a total of 1,045 different operators.

The high level of fragmentation is particularly striking: 832 operators have only one location. This means that about four out of five recorded companies are independent, single-site businesses. Together, they represent 42.7 percent of the locations on the platform.

Even the largest providers do not currently dominate the market. The five largest chains combined account for about 13 percent of the locations, while even the ten largest providers together reach less than one-fifth.

Geographically, the supply is heavily concentrated in coastal regions, where about two-thirds of the recorded locations are situated. Among the cities, Madrid leads with 264 locations, followed by Barcelona with 187. These are followed by Zaragoza with 48, Valencia with 47, Seville with 37, and Málaga with 35 locations.

For storabble, this fragmentation is also an opportunity: a comparison platform can create significant value, especially where numerous smaller providers are difficult for customers to find.

From student project to a platform in five countries

The story of storabble began in 2023 as part of an entrepreneurship course at the University of St. Gallen. The original idea: searching for storage space should be as easy as booking a hotel room.

In its founding year, the startup participated in the Swiss version of "Dragons' Den" (Die Höhle der Löwen) and gained e-commerce entrepreneur Roland Brack as an investor. The first financing round totaled CHF 335,000.

Since then, storabble has gradually expanded its presence. Switzerland was followed by Germany, Austria, and France. In February 2026, the company also acquired the Düsseldorf-based startup on-storage.

In July 2026, storabble launched what it claims to be the world's first ChatGPT app for a storage marketplace. With its entry into the Spanish market, the platform now includes 6,348 verified storage locations across five European countries.

AI is transforming the possibilities for small startups

The expansion of storabble serves as a prime example of how automation and artificial intelligence are changing the way startups go international. Tasks that once required local teams and significant financial resources can now be increasingly automated, at least for data-intensive business models.

For startups, this means that laying the right technological groundwork can become a decisive competitive advantage. Those who build scalable processes early on can potentially test and enter new markets faster and with fewer personnel.

At the same time, this case shows that AI doesn't just have to be used for individual internal tasks. It can be an integral part of a company's actual business model and scaling strategy.

What’s next for storabble?

Following its market entry, storabble aims to further expand its coverage in Spain and connect additional operators directly to the platform. In the future, these operators will be able to manage their own listings.

Just five days after launching in Spain, storabble entered into a partnership with Self Storage Maps, a marketing agency specializing in the self-storage industry. Through this collaboration, the agency can directly manage its clients' storabble listings.

Spain is not intended to be the last new market. storabble is planning further expansion across Europe and, in the long term, aims to be present in every European country with a significant storage market.

For the Swiss startup, founded in 2023, entering the Spanish market is more than just another step in its expansion. It also demonstrates how a technological infrastructure built early on can help young companies internationalize more quickly and efficiently.
