October brought renewed momentum to Switzerland’s business landscape. A total of 4,805 new companies were registered in the commercial register — an increase of 14.1% compared to September and 8.1% compared to October of the previous year. Following a promising September, the positive trend continued into the final quarter of the year.
French-speaking Switzerland remains the most dynamic region
With 1,370 new companies, Romandie once again leads all regions. Compared to September, this represents a strong 23.9% increase, and year-on-year growth of 4.7%.
The canton of Vaud tops the list with 458 new registrations, followed by Geneva (399) and Valais (217). Fribourg (179) saw the sharpest monthly growth, while Neuchâtel (89) and Jura (28) remained stable.
Central Switzerland gains further strength
In Central Switzerland, the pace of company formations accelerated in October. With 760 new companies, this represents an increase of 11.9% month-on-month and 17.3% year-on-year.
The canton of Zug continues to drive the region with 367 new registrations, followed by Lucerne (205) and Schwyz (132). The smaller cantons — Nidwalden (29), Obwalden (17), and Uri (10) — maintained steady figures.
Zurich remains on a solid footing
The Zurich region recorded 869 new companies, an 8.6% increase from September and 6.8% more than in October 2024. Despite already high levels, Zurich continues to attract new entrepreneurs, particularly in the service, finance, and technology sectors.
Northwestern Switzerland continues to grow
1,027 new companies were founded in Northwestern Switzerland, representing 5.7% growth compared to September and 17% compared to last year.
Bern (390) led the region, followed by Aargau (278) and Basel-Stadt (133). The cantons of Basel-Landschaft (106) and Solothurn (120) also contributed to the region’s strong results.
Eastern Switzerland with positive results
In Eastern Switzerland, 586 new companies were registered — an increase of around 20% compared to September and 3% compared to October 2024.
St. Gallen (254) led the region, followed by Thurgau (137) and Graubünden (100). Smaller cantons such as Schaffhausen (38), Appenzell Ausserrhoden (28), Appenzell Innerrhoden (18) and Glarus (11) complemented the strong showing.
Ticino with steady performance
In Ticino, 193 new companies were founded — up 15.6% from September, but 14.6% lower than last year. After a quieter summer, the region is regaining momentum, even if it has not yet reached the levels of 2024.
Outlook: A strong October sets the tone for year-end
With 4,805 new company formations, Switzerland’s entrepreneurial activity remains robust. Almost all regions saw growth in October, with Central Switzerland, Romandie, and Northwestern Switzerland contributing strongly to this excellent month.
If seasonal patterns persist, November should bring another slight increase, paving the way for a very solid year-end result and underscoring the continued strength of Switzerland’s start-up landscape.
