150 fewer formations across Switzerland

A total of 4,838 companies were founded in Switzerland in July 2026, compared with 4,988 in the same month of the previous year. This represents a decline of 150 formations or 3.0%.

Northwestern Switzerland was the only major region to record growth. Eastern Switzerland remained almost stable, while French-speaking Switzerland, Central Switzerland, Zurich and Ticino declined.

French-speaking Switzerland: Down 3.7%

Company formations in French-speaking Switzerland fell from 1,479 to 1,424. The sharpest decrease was recorded in Jura, where the number dropped from 52 to 31, a decline of 40.4%. Neuchâtel also fell by 18.7% to 74 formations.

Vaud and Valais moved in the opposite direction. Vaud increased by 4.9% to 513 formations, while Valais grew by 7.6% to 255.

Northwestern Switzerland: Only region to grow

Northwestern Switzerland recorded 1,051 formations, an increase of 1.4%. Basel-Landschaft grew by 13.8% to 124 formations. Bern, Basel-Stadt and Solothurn also recorded increases.

Aargau declined from 326 to 304 formations, corresponding to a decrease of 6.7%.

Eastern Switzerland: Overall figure nearly stable

Eastern Switzerland recorded 568 formations, only one fewer than in July 2025. The resulting decline was 0.2%.

Appenzell Innerrhoden and Glarus reported strong percentage increases, although based on low absolute figures. St. Gallen grew by 10.5% to 252 formations. Thurgau, by contrast, fell from 147 to 103, a decline of 29.9%.

Central Switzerland: Largest regional decline

Central Switzerland recorded 694 formations, 8.0% fewer than in July 2025. The number fell by 30.0% in Nidwalden, 19.0% in Obwalden and 10.4% in Zug.

Uri increased from 8 to 14 formations. Although this represents growth of 75.0%, it amounts to six additional companies.

Zurich and Ticino below the previous year

The canton of Zurich recorded 882 formations, a decline of 4.1%. Ticino reported 219 formations, 4.4% fewer than in July 2025.
